Little Legs and a Long Road
Today saw the morning dry and less windy. We had decided to walk out to the lighthouse near Scalpay today, however we were going to have a cooked breakfast before heading out. Once Lyns was up I headed down to the shore in front of our cottage. There was still a swell from the storm yesterday and with some interesting rock formations it made for a good photo or two.
I headed back to the house just in time for breakfast and what a breakfast it was. It had all come from Macleod’s in Stornoway and boy was it good. I tried white pudding for the first time and whilst it was nice, I will not be swapping my black pudding for it any time soon. I also tried beef sausages and they were amazing. I will be hunting some of these bad boys out when I get home.
After breakfast we headed out. We made a slight detour on the way to change Grandad’s Harris Tweed iPad cover as the one he had bought did not quite fit. Once we arrived we were greeted with overcast skies but at least it was dry! It was about a mile and a half to the lighthouse quite a long way for James’ little legs, however, he strode out, with only a little carry up some of the bigger hills.
It took us about an hour but we all made it, James was tiring but still in good spirits, in fact even Lyns was as well. We had come here more or less four years ago to the day, whilst on our honeymoon. Lyns had been pregnant with James at the time and she found it a struggle to walk all the way here but she was determined to do it. It was nice to see her do it again now but with a smile on her face and almost a spring in her step.
After the obligatory pictures looking towards the lighthouse, we walked down the hill to it. There is not much there, a little bothy with some information about the lighthouse is about it. It has had quite an interesting history, there is still the tower from the original lighthouse, started in 1787 and first lit in 1789. There is a lot of history in one site, if you would like to know more, please click here.
As James was sitting eating his lunch, we noticed the rain heading our way. We headed back straight away, however, two minutes into our walk the rain hit. Cue a very wet walk back to the car. I had James on my shoulders all the way back to it seemed a very long mile and half, however, we made good time. James loved being out in the rain though and thought it was wonderful. Even Lyns was almost smiling when we got back so it cannot have been that bad. I should have got a picture of us arriving back soaking wet through however, getting a camera out in that rain would have been suicidal for the camera!!
After a drive back to the cottage and a brew, we were all back in good spirits ready from a yummy dinner cooked by Granny!
